Safety Guide for Assembling A DIY Scaffold Tower
Safety is of the utmost importance whenever you are using a scaffold tower. However, assembling a DIY scaffold tower isn't always straightforward so it is important to know what you’re doing before you start. Scaffolding can be very useful whenever you need to do some sort of construction work above ground, but with height comes danger for anyone working on it. While there are lots of different types of scaffolding as well as different materials the basic idea is often the same when assembling them. In this article I'll be going through a few tips to make sure that you know how to assemble a DIY scaffold tower the right way.
The first thing you should do is make sure that the area you are going to be assembling the scaffolding on is safe. That means that you should ensure the ground is level so that there is less chance of the scaffolding toppling over. You should also make sure that the ground where the scaffolding will be based is dry and hence not slippery. Erecting a DIY scaffolding tower can often be quite hard work so it is a good idea to make sure the area you are going to be putting it is clear from any debris and materials before you start.
If you have a type of scaffolding that needs to be supported by the wall then make sure you know exactly where you're going to use the tie-ins so the scaffolding is secure before you begin.
In some cases you will find that you have to assemble scaffolding on soft ground. If this is the case then you need to make sure you put footpads under the scaffolding feet to ensure you have a solid base on which to assemble it.
If you’re putting together a large tower it helps to have a small team of people to do it with. Even if you only putting up a small access scaffolding tower it is always a good idea to make sure you have a partner. One person should assemble the scaffolding while the other person makes sure that he or she has all the right equipment and tools to do so. Remember to wear a safety harness when assembling the tower.
Safety is vital when you're assembling a DIY scaffold tower which is why when doing so you should always check each component for any problems. If there is any sign of rusting or damage to one of the components then you should never use the scaffolding. A scaffolding tower is only as solid as its weakest part, so make sure you check each part individually. There are some parts of the scaffolding tower that will be used for locking and these ones you should be especially careful to check both before assembling and also when they are under strain.
One thing that you need to think about to make sure your scaffolding is as safe as possible is whether you need to add a scaffolding stairway or whether you can just use a ladder. If you're only going to be doing a small job that takes a short amount of time then the ladder will probably be sufficient. However, if you're going to be using the tower on a long-term job then it is definitely a good idea to put up some sort of stairway so that your workers can get up and down easily and safely. Also, if you're going to be having a lot of weight on the scaffolding then extra bracing can be a good idea just to be on the safe side.
